Zhongze Lu - Illustration
As a Chinese illustrator who is receiving his graduate education in the United States, I can always feel the powerful influences from both traditional Chinese culture and the modern Western culture. For this reason, I am trying to find a balance between the opposite forces and a place where opposites meet.
I do Chinese ink paintings, however, my ink paintings are different from the traditional style. Most traditional Chinese paintings present escaping from one’s surroundings and losing one’s self in the infinite. In contrast, all my paintings are about common people, such as my family and me, and their daily lives. My ink paintings are not so elegant as people’s impressions about Chinese ink paintings; I do not use fine lines all the time, the quality of line work would be decided by the content. And that is my way to break the close and stable form of traditional Chinese ink painting. I want my audience to have the chances of going into my paintings and sharing my emotions rather than standing far to look at them.
I do not limit my audience just to be those who are interested in Chinese culture. In the contrast, I want to share my emotions and feelings with people who care about and appreciate the beauty of daily life.
